Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in the paramagnetic state and the polarized neutron scattering
Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction in the paramagnetic state leads to the
incommensurate spin fluctuations with incommensurate vector proportional to the
relative strength of the DM interaction. We show that the DM interaction leads
to helical spin fluctuations which may be observed by the polarized neutron
scattering.Comment: 4 pages, no figures, PNCMI-2000 proceedings, phbauth style file

Chiral scattering in complex magnets
General properties of the chiral scattering of polarized neutrons are
considered for two possible axial vector interactions: Zeeman energy and
non-alternating Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Behavior in magnetic field
of helical magnetic structures is discussed for and magneto-electric
materials. The dynamical chiral fluctuations in magnetic field are considered
briefly. The chiral fluctuations in materials with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya
interaction are discussed and an assumption is made that above the transition
temperature they have to be incommensurate.Comment: 8
Spin chirality induced by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and the polarized neutron scattering
We discuss the influence of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction in the
Heizenberg spin chain model for the observables in the polarized neutron
scattering experiments. We show that different choices of the parameters of DM
interaction may leave the spectrum of the problem unchanged, while the
observable spin-spin correlation functions may differ qualitatively.
Particularly, for the uniform DM interaction one has the incommensurate
fluctuations and polarization-dependent neutron scattering in the paramagnetic
phase. We sketch the possible generalization of our treatment to higher
dimensions.Comment: 4 pages, REVTEX, no figures, references added, to appear in PR
RECENT STUDIES OF THE DEPOLARIZATION OF NEUTRONS IN CONDENSED MATTER
The depolarization of neutrons represents a convenient method to study large-size magnetic inhomogeneities. The most consistent way to describe it is in terms of quantum mechanics as a result of small angle magnetic scattering. The magnitude of the depolarization depends on the mutual orientation of the polarisation vector [MATH], the neutron velocity [MATH], and the magnetic texture of the sample under study. Results of an experimental study of such a texture in an impurity ferromagnet PdFe are presented. The determination of cluster size in amorphous magnets and the depolarization in Bragg scattering are considered
Antiferromagnetic fluctuations and neutron scattering in high- superconductors
The magnetic neutron scattering data in the high superconductors are discussed and an attempt of their theoretical interpretation is given. It is shown that the conventional Fermi liquid theory is incapable to explain the data above , but they strongly support the nested Fermi liquid theory. This theory predicts strong anisotropy of the scattering in the plane perpendicular to the magnetic rod. The observation of this anisotropy would be a crucial experiment for this theory. Experimental data below are qualitatively explained in the frame of the Abrikosov-Gorkov theory of the superconductivity with a magnetic disorder
ON THE POLARIZATION APPEARING IN NEUTRON SCATTERING IN UNMAGNETIZED SAMPLES
Polarisation of neutrons in their scattering from magnets which do not have a macroscopic moment is predicted. (This refers to ferromagnets above Tc, or below Tc in the multidomain state, spin glasses in the absence of external field, and antiferromagnets). The polarization which is due to threepoint dynamic spin correlations originates from the interference of contributions in the first and second orders of the perturbation theory for the magnetic scattering amplitude. It is directed parallel to the normal to the scattering plane, [MATH] = [[MATH]], where [MATH] and [MATH] are the incident and scattered neutron momenta, respectively. This effect is extremely sensitive to the spin system dynamics and is absent in elastic scattering. Its magnitude is determined by the spin correlation length and by the amplitude of the pair spin fluctuation decay (or of the merging of two fluctuations). Estimates [1] of the scattering in ferromagnets above Tc at τ = (T - Tc)x T-1c ~ 10-3 suggest the appearance of polarization at a level of 10-3 ÷ 10-4. The magnitude of the effect agrees with the results of measurements carried out on iron [2]. Similar experiments for the spin glass phase and near the transitions from the latter to the paramagnetic and asperomagnetic phases seem to be of most interest
ON THE POLARIZED NEUTRON RESEARCH OF THE CRITICAL DYNAMICS OF FERROMAGNETS ABOVE THE CURIE POINT
Small angle polarized neutron scattering experiments are discussed as applied to the investigation of the critical dynamics of ferromagnets. The results of an experimental study of spin dynamics in 57Fe samples by a three-dimansional analysis of the scattered neutron polarization vector over the temperature range τ = 10-4 ÷ 10-1 and momentum transfer interval k θ = 10-2 ÷ 10-1 Å-1 are presented. The experimental data are conpared with theoretical predictions obtained from the asymptotic behavior of the spin Green function of a ferromagnet at high energies
